Hello. I am Bruce Blackwell, the founder of the firm. I am not an HR person. I am a marketing professional and businessperson who knows how to bring products to market successfully. I have done it by using innovative strategies, effective messaging, and creative methods.  I have done it for companies large and small, across industries from technology to motion pictures to restaurants to construction companies.

I view a job search as being a new product launch. I’ve done product launches for corporations  since … well, let’s just say since a long time ago. Today, instead of being “things,” my “products” are people. Just like you.

I define your product’s capabilities, its strengths and weaknesses. I create Unique Selling Propositions. I create Advertising in the form of resumes and letters. I train the sales force on how to sell the product. (FYI, you are the salesforce and you are the product. I will show you how to make the sale successfully). Lastly, I manage the product’s marketing campaign to help ensure it is producing results.

At Career Strategies, we offer a rare combination of marketing experience, in-depth knowledge of job search methods, and specific expertise in the special requirements of attorneys, senior executives, and job seekers aged 50+.

Our Corporate Vision.

My vision for this practice was unprecedented at the time, 1992. My goal was to do something no one else had ever done — to offer, in one place, all of the job search services a professional in transition could need. Career Testing. Coaching. Recruiting. Outplacement. Resume Writing. We were successful at it, and so today, it is not uncommon for recruiters to offer resume writing and counseling services, or for resume writers to do recruiting and outplacement. But we were the pioneers. Experience counts.

Since 1992, we have helped several thousand lawyers, executives and entrepreneurs through successful job searches and alternative career pursuits.  Here’s a brief description of the ways we can help you or your business.

Personal Services.

We offer career testing and assessment for those seeking to explore their options. We also provide job search assistance, which includes professional resume writing, resume distribution, marketing plans, interview preparation and job search coaching. Our personal clients range from young professionals to those well into their 60s.

Career Development On-line Courses.

For younger professionals and other do-it-yourself job seekers, we offer low-cost, powerful tools and on-line instruction programs to help focus and shorten their job searches.

Recruiting Services.

We do recruiting, primarily for attorneys, but also for executives and health care professionals. If you are a hiring manager in a law firm, an in-house legal department, or a medical services provider, we can find good people for your team.


On the other side of the fence, we do outplacement, and provide company-sponsored job search assistance for lawyers and executives who are being let go.

Business Start-Ups and Business Improvement.

If you are thinking about starting your own business but aren’t sure what kind of business or how to get it going, we can help with everything from concept development to logistics to marketing plans. Although we are based just north of New York City, we work globally. We have had clients in nearly every state in the U.S., and have worked with clients in the U.K., Russia, Israel, Puerto Rico, Guam, Japan, Canada, Denmark, Holland, France, Ireland, the United Arab Emirates, the Philippines, the Virgin Islands, Mexico and more. We are particularly strong along the Eastern Seaboard, but have many clients in the Mid-West, Southwest, and the West Coast from California to Washington State.  Whether you are looking for a job around the world or around the corner, we can help you find one.

How Our Process Works.

When someone first contacts us, we have a 15-30 minute screening call to get a sense of their career issues, to discuss their resumes and determine if they may be suitable clients for us.

This, frankly, is a weeding out process. We reject more than 80% of the candidates we speak with. We are not right for everyone, nor is everyone right for us.

If, though, we feel a candidate may be suitable, we will offer a 30-45 minute consultation. This is an in-depth review of their current circumstances, career aspirations, marketing strategies and the like. We will ask tough questions and offer valuable insights in return.

After that discussion, if we want to accept that candidate,  we schedule a third discussion. Prior to that session, we analyze the person’s situation and prepare a Proposal of Service. We are very menu-driven, and have more than 45 different program options to consider. We will spend an hour discussing our ideas with a candidate, so that they can make an informed decision about retaining us.

Whether working on a 50+ job search, an alternative legal career, career planning for a younger professional, or a business process improvement case, we design customized programs for each individual’s specific needs. We simply do not believe in a “one-size-fits-all, off-the shelf” approach. You are unique. Your situation is unique. Your program will be unique.

The Economics. You can afford us.  

Our services are provided on an hourly fee basis and are on a sliding fee scale. We are an approved PayPal Credit service, so qualified clients can start working with us with a  six-month,  interest-free payment schedule. We also offer our own installment plan programs. We are surprisingly affordable, and our rates are very reasonable. Most of our clients are in the $95,000 to $250,000 salary range, with some earning less and some earning more.

As recognized authorities on job search issues, members of my team and I have been interviewed by news organizations including The New Jersey Lawyer, New Jersey Law Journal, Connecticut Law Tribune, News 12, Westchester Business Journal, the Newark Star-Ledger, the New York Post and others.

We have also lectured on job search and alternative career issues for legal and business groups in the Northeast, including the New York State Bar Association, the Institute for Continuing Legal Education, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, Pace Law School and numerous other  colleges and universities, the New Jersey Bar Association, the Association of Corporate Counsel and many others. I have also been honored to provide a seminar at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia.

I am one of a handful of professionals to have been asked to serve as  Charter Member of the Career Counseling panel for the New York City Bar Association, I role I still hold, and have  been called “a leading career expert” by the New York State Bar Association. Career Strategies is an Associate Member of the Westchester County Bar Association, and  I am a member of its  Career Transition team.
